Crystal Mountain recognized as Innovator of the Year at Governor’s Energy Excellence Awards

THOMPSONVILLE, MI – Crystal Mountain was named “Innovator of the Year” during the Governor’s Energy Excellence Awards luncheon held earlier today at the Wharton Center in East Lansing, Michigan.

Crystal Mountain was among three finalists in the category including . The first annual Governor’s Energy Excellence Awards honors Michigan organizations and individuals for their commitment to responsible energy production and consumption. In addition to Innovator of the Year, winners among 24 finalists were announced in each of eight categories that include Best Projects, Contractor of the Year and Best Communication or Education Program.

As a business in the state’s third largest industry, Crystal Mountain has shown a commitment to energy conservation as well as sustainable growth and development over the last quarter-century that has been recognized by organizations like the Sierra Club, Michigan Lodging and Tourism Association and Detroit Free Press. The resort was the first in Michigan to purchase wind energy credits to cover the power used by its high-speed quad chairlift, reducing the need on the grid for fossil fuel produced energy. The resort built the Midwest’s first LEED-certified spa and one of only five in the nation at the time it was completed in 2009. Crystal Mountain was also the first resort in northern-lower Michigan to install public electric vehicle (EV) charging stations, complimentary to all resort guests. In 2008, 2009 and 2013, Crystal hosted the Conference on Michigan’s Future: Energy, Economy and Environment, bringing together state lawmakers, business leaders as well as international science and energy-sector experts to discuss the challenges ahead, their impact on Michigan and practical solutions.
